The Final BARGAINER
November 5, 2008
The Association and the District signed a tentative agreement today. The Association and the District could open two articles and Salary and Benefits. As you are aware the State budget is a mess this year and schools didn’t receive much of an increase in funding (.68). The slight increase the schools did receive did not include an increase in all of the categorical programs. There is also a concern the Governor might make mid-year cuts. In these tough economic times we were able to agree to the following changes to the contract:
Article 8 – Use of Personal Vehicle
- Increased the deductible the district would reimburse an employee in the event of an accident while driving their vehicle on District business from $500 to $1000
- The District will repair any damages to employee’s vehicle caused by transporting equipment on District business up to $1000
- Increased the amount of time the district will either provide a vehicle or provide other work if the employee’s vehicle is disabled to 15 days
Article 20 – Total Compensation
- No salary increase but the District will fully fund Health and Welfare Benefits for full time employees
- Created a retirement plan that allows an employee to retire and continue working in their current position for 960 hours or 6 months. The employee would get a retirement check, be paid their base salary by the District and receive Health and Welfare Benefits for the 960 hours or 6 months.
Article 27 – Sick Leave
- If an employee used 12 days of sick leave each of the last 2 years and the employee has accrued less than 20 days of sick leave, they would need to provide a doctor’s note after 2 consecutive illness days rather than 3 days.
The VCEA Executive Board will decide when and where a ratification vote will be held on these changes. This is the last year of our three-year agreement with the District. Next year the whole contract will be open. VCEA will put together a contract committee to decide which changes may need to be made in the next contract. Anyone interested in being on the committee should contact the VCEA office and let us know you are interested.
