Compensatory Time
VCEA won a grievance at level II regarding employees choosing to take compensatory
time off in lieu of overtime pay. The district was telling employees they could no longer
select to use comp time instead of overtime pay and was changing the time sheets of the employees.
The district agreed to follow the contract and if employees had their time sheets changed
they could notify the district and they would make the adjustments to their salaries and
taxes.
Here is how the comp time works according to the contract:
• The employee decides whether or not to take comp time in lieu of overtime pay for the first 40 hours annually.
• After 40 and up to 60 hours annually the employee must get supervisor approval to
accrue comp time
• Comp time is compensated at time and one-half
• To use the comp time provision the employee must notify the supervisor (in writing) 5
days after the overtime was worked
• The use of comp time to take off work must be coordinated between the employee
and supervisor
• Any comp time not taken by the end of the fiscal year shall be paid to the employee
as time and one-half
If you were affected by this situation and want your comp time back, contact payroll. If
you have any questions call VCEA.
